Christmas in NYC
There’s a certain kind of magic in New York this time of year. The twinkle lights, the bustling streets, the first snow that makes the whole city feel like a movie set… and yes -the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree!
Over the years, NYC has become one of the most special places for our family to create Christmas memories, and I’m excited to share our favorite festive spots with you… plus photos from our past holiday seasons in the city!
Every year, coming back to New York feels like coming home. It’s where my favorite memories live — the glow of The Plaza tree, walks down Fifth Avenue with Brian, and now, watching our son’s eyes light up at the sight of Rockefeller Center for the first time. The city has changed, and so have we, but the feeling never does.
For me, Christmas in New York isn’t just a season… it’s a heartbeat. A rhythm that brings me back to myself. The lights, the music, the familiar chill in the air- they all remind me that no matter where life takes us, there’s nowhere quite like this place in December.
So this is my love letter to the city that still takes my breath away, and all the little moments that make Christmastime in New York my favorite time of year.
Our Christmas season always begins at The Plaza. It’s been a tradition for Brian and me since the first year we started dating — and last year, we had the joy of bringing our son for his very first Christmas. There’s something so timeless and romantic about that grand lobby — the twinkling tree, the live music, the smell of fresh pine mixed with coffee and champagne.
If staying overnight isn’t on your itinerary (it’s definitely a splurge), here’s my favorite workaround: book Afternoon Tea at The Palm Court. It’s one of the most beautiful experiences in the city this time of year. You’ll get access to the hotel’s main lobby, the tree, and all of the festive magic — without needing a room key. It’s such a special way to spend an afternoon, especially if you’re visiting from out of town or just want to treat yourself to a quintessential New York holiday moment.
If The Plaza is the heart of Christmas, Fifth Avenue is its sparkle. This is where the city truly comes alive — every block feels like a scene from a holiday movie.
Start at Rockefeller Center, where you can watch the skaters glide beneath the famous Christmas tree. It’s one of those moments that never loses its magic, no matter how many times you’ve seen it. Just across the street is St. Patrick’s Cathedral — one of my favorite quiet spots in the middle of all the chaos. Step inside, light a candle, or if you can, attend a holiday mass — it’s breathtakingly beautiful this time of year.
Afterward, grab a coffee at the Ralph’s Coffee Truck parked right across from the cathedral (it’s as charming as it sounds), then head to Louis Vuitton Café for lunch. It’s chic, festive, and perfect for a mid-shopping break.
Speaking of shopping — this is where I do most of my holiday browsing. From the window displays at Saks Fifth Avenue (don’t miss their light show after dark) to my favorite stops at Chanel, Dior, and Bergdorf’s — Fifth Avenue is truly where holiday dreams are made.
End the night with dinner at Le Avenue, tucked right inside Saks with a view of the Rockefeller tree. Order an espresso martini made with tequila reposado (trust me!) and the pasta morel — it’s their signature dish flown straight from Paris and worth every bite.
If Rockefeller Center is where you go to see the magic, Bryant Park is where you go to feel it. There’s something so charming about the Winter Village — the small wooden market stalls glowing under twinkle lights, the sound of skates carving through the ice, and the smell of hot apple cider drifting through the air.
I always make a stop here during the season, even if it’s just for a walk through the markets with a cup of mulled wine in hand. You’ll find everything from handmade ornaments and artisanal candles to the most delicious holiday snacks.
If you’re in the mood for something cozy, grab a table at The Lodge Deck overlooking the rink. It’s the perfect little spot to warm up with a cocktail and watch the skaters glide by under the city lights. For me, Bryant Park feels like the perfect blend of downtown charm and uptown sparkle — festive, but never too crowded to lose its magic.
To end a perfect Christmas day in the city, there’s nothing like a cozy dinner at The Polo Bar. It’s one of those quintessential New York experiences — candlelit, elegant, and filled with the kind of old-world charm you just can’t find anywhere else.
Getting a reservation here can be tricky, but here’s a little insider tip: call exactly 30 days in advance right when reservations open, and be flexible with your time. If that doesn’t work, try stopping in for a drink at the bar — it’s first come, first served, and still gives you the full Polo Bar experience (plus the best martini in the city, in my opinion).
If you’re craving Italian, Cipriani is another timeless favorite. There’s something about that warm glow, the white tablecloths, and the sound of clinking Bellinis that feels instantly festive. I always order the vanilla meringue cake — it’s light, nostalgic, and the perfect ending to a holiday dinner. They even sell whole cakes, which make the most elegant addition to your own Christmas party or family gathering at home. It’s the kind of dessert that doesn’t just taste good — it feels like a celebration.

There’s a stillness that settles over New York in December- even amidst the rush, the noise, the endless lights. It’s in those quiet moments; a walk through Central Park, a sip of coffee on a cold morning, a glance up at the tree, that I’m reminded what this season is really about.
For me, Christmas in New York will always feel like coming home. It’s where my story began, where new memories keep unfolding, and where the magic never fades. Whether it’s your first December here or your fiftieth, may you find that same feeling… of wonder, warmth, and gratitude… that this city so effortlessly brings to life.
